Irish Coffee

Mmmm Irish Coffee

Can anyone tell me though, how long will Baileys last? The bottle says it tasted best before 10/2003, but with 17%vol alcohol I think it is pretty well preserved?

Website stats

, david, Tuesday, 10:51 pm

It’s been almost 10 months since I moved my website here and I’ve been looking at the stats. It beats tidying up the flat which I should be doing.

Unique site visits (which I think is the most useful metric) seemed to peak in May at 7000 sites and since then has been around 6000 sites per month. How does this compare with other people’s websites?

My top search terms are pretty consistently for the C++ containers, iterators and strings cheat sheets I wrote years ago. I should restyle them but I don’t want to break the links people have made. There’s no hits on anything wacky like wisdom teeth self extraction and my hyperlinked C++ grammar has never got the notice it deserved. I have had a few hits for wm_delete_window, Thinstation and invalid module format though (Google for them if they interest you).

Oh and that big spike in KBytes this month is an image of Ubuntu I hosted here when I couldn’t work out an easier way to get it to a customer.

The SliceHost virtual machine has served this all up smoothly and reliably. I did upgrade to more RAM (512B) as I was thrashing the 256B slice, but since then I’ve had no problems and have been very happy with them.

Here’s to the next 10 months of LinuxSoftware.co.nz!

The AUTC Hut, Waitakere Ranges Tramp

Tramped up to Ongaruanuku, the Auckland University Tramping Club Hut in the Waitakere Ranges. I’d forgotten socks for my boots, I just wore them anyway. We followed the Waitakere Tramline through the tunnel and up to the Waitakere Dam. There’s some construction going on there which means we couldn’t walk along the dam, but the track around the base is no hassle. Then up the Fence Line Track to the Hut. (The Fence Line Track is part of the Montana Heritage Trail which has had a lot of work done on it, all very well maintained and gravelled with not a bit of mud to stick to your boots.)

One of the best times we had as children was staying at the AUTC Hut as a family. I must have been about 10? It was a great adventure. Cooking on the open fire. Trying to trap the rat. The hut is still pretty much as I remember. Still decorated with stolen road signs. Still occupied by a fat rat. There is a cistern in the long drop toilet. This was a joke with the water soaking anyone too green to realize you don’t flush a long drop. It looked like the plumbing had rotted away long ago, but I didn’t try it!

Waitakeres

Return was via Robinson Ridge and Cascade Tracks. It is quite a climb to get back over to the Auckland City Walk valley. Plenty of mud on these tracks. Was a long day, but a good tramp. No blisters even without socks.

Web cam

david, Monday, 8:22 am

As you can see I have a new toy, an Axis 207W webcam. Originally it was for monitoring my cat door, now its just for seeing what the view out the window is. I’m still playing with it, so I’ll write more about it later.

Norton Antivirus saves the International Space Station

Wouldn’t have been a problem with Linux.
