House warming

, , , , david, Wednesday, 10:49 pm

Had a house warming in my new lounge, aka the London Bar. Followed by an inspection of the apartment and then pizza at Pizza Pizza.

Came home to Vector playing with the lamppost outside my flat, still trying to work out what they’re up to.

New Apartment

, , david, Sunday, 9:16 pm

I got the keys to my new apartment this weekend.  Went in and had a look.  It’s compact, but should be all the room I need.   I’ll gradually move in over the next two weeks.

Moving in to town

, , david, Sunday, 7:03 pm

I’ve given notice to my landlord I’m going to be moving out of my current flat.  Had lunch with the family today and was telling them how I think I’d like to buy an apartment, but wanted to try apartment living out first. Serendipitously Heather’s apartment is going to be free next week, so we’ve agreed I’ll take the lease on.  It’s a small furnished bedsit, but I think that’ll be fine.  It’ll be easier to keep tidy.  Heather has offered to store all my stuff in her garage, there’s not going to be room for it in the apartment.  I haven’t actually seen the apartment, but I understand it is handy to my work, bars, restaurants and the library.  If things go well I’ll start looking for a bigger apartment to buy. If not I’ll be looking to buy a house/unit, or else for a new place to rent.

Linux Users' Group

, , , david, Monday, 11:25 pm

The Auckland Linux Users’ Group meets monthly on a Monday night (normally 7.30pm on the first Monday of the month). The last meeting was Monday 9th June with Martin Kealey talking on advanced BASH.

Dropped in at the library after work and had a beer or three with Simon at the London Bar before heading up. At the old Delphi Users’ Group, Borland used to ply us with beer and pizza, but the LUG is a BYO biscuits and coke event – maybe IBM or Novell would like to sponsor refreshments?

Turned out our room in AuckUni’s new Business School was double booked. But Colin had a room available in Engineering, and then when Martin couldn’t get through the firewall to his server Vince volunteered his laptop to demonstrate BASH. Shows the Linux community spirit.

A few things I noted down as new to me were:

  • Bash arrays: A = (1 2 3 4); echo ${A[0]}
  • xargs with find is more efficient (so faster) than using -exec
  • keyboard bindings
  • double square braces [[ are built in operators which can be used instead of the test [ command, e.g. if [[ built && in ]]

Driving and Drinking

, , , david, Friday, 9:28 pm

and eating.
Had the Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 ship party today. Driving carts on the Auckland Luge and drinking, the perfect combination ;-) Responsibly we did the driving before the drinking. We had a nice meal at the Long Bay Restaurant too.

The photo is thanks to Michael. As you can see I was having a great time. Pity you can’t see have fast I was going!
