New Cat

This is little Bricat-Mogadishu-Hadron-Jesus-Brian-Notthemessiah-Justverynaughtyboy-LiguidLiguid-Harry-Houdini-Bebebe who has come to live with me. He answers to “puss”. We think he is a part Abyssinian and part Possum.

Musings from Unit 4 of the Te Aroha Motel

, , david, Friday, 9:46 pm

Arrived in Te Aroha about 4pm.  I’m pretty sure I took a zig-zag route, but got here anyway.  Talked to the manager about tramps and she’s kindly offered to drive me down to Waioronomai Valley so I can walk up Te Aroha and then back down into the other side of town (9am tomorrow).

They have wireless (which I’m using right now) in the motel, but their DNS server is screwed up. I’m guessing they may be favouring WINS over DNS.  I need to contact the Te Aroha LUG. My solution is just to use the Xtra DNS servers (202.27.158.40 and 202.27.156.72).

Went for a walk arount the wetland, then up past the YHA (which I wanted to check out) along another track behind the town and then back down to the domain.  Bought some food for dinner and tomorrow’s lunch at the supermarket and have been just chilling out here.  Another great feature of the motel is the room comes with a cat to keep me company.

Pretty tired.  It’s great how quiet it is, even though the motel is right on the main street.  No screams or sirens or yelling like in Auckland City on a Friday night.  Will probably go to sleep soon.  Still haven’t fixed the blog theme.  Will pack tomorrow, only a day trip so no big deal.  Wish I could find my compass.

Moore photos available over here.

Not a good week

, , david, Saturday, 4:40 pm

I don’t really want to blog about this stuff. Was avoiding it.

My sister Rebecca is in hospital in Switzerland after a serious fall mountain climbing. She has had an operation to put two pins into her back. She is still in intensive care, but latest news is she should move to a regular ward soon (may have moved already). Suzanne our eldest sister has flown there and is with her now.

I guess having a string of Oliver updates I should also write the conclusion. My cat, Oliver, died early this morning. I gave him his regular 7 units of insulin on Friday evening, but either he hadn’t eaten enough, or I injected it straight into the blood stream or something else went wrong and he went into hypoglycemic shock. I managed to get him to eat a bit, but he still went into seizures and after a lot of that, paralysis. I took him to the after hours vet and we put him down.

I’ve disabled comments on this post. Thanks for your well wishes, but I don’t want to come back to this post.

Update

, , , david, Thursday, 8:53 pm

Oliver is now on 8 units of insulin in the morning and 7 at night and seems to be doing ok on this high dosage. I’ll have to take him back to the vet for more blood tests next week. He’s pretty settled in our new digs. We’ve been here for a full week now and he’s pretty comfortable though it requires a much bigger jump to get up onto this bed than my old futon.

It’s good now I’ve finally moved, been a busy few days…
Tues: Vet visit
Weds: Moved all my furniture and a heap of my stuff to my sister’s garage. I can recommend Busby Carriers if you’re moving.
Thurs: Tidying up, and moving more stuff.
Fri: Got the carpets cleaned. Recommend Jae for that.
Sat: More cleaning. Poetry Slam @ London Bar with Tim.
Sun: Farewell lunch with Cip & co @ GBs.  He is off to climb mountains in the South Island, Canada, and South America.
Mon: Final inspection and handover of keys to the old flat
Tues: Nothing much, dinner @ Kiwi Country Noodles and TV. Phone and internet started working.
Weds: Went and saw “In the shadow of the Moon” at the Rialto. Had a couple of beers afterwards.
Thurs: Tonight … just another quiet night at home.
