Not a good week

, , david, Saturday, 4:40 pm

I don’t really want to blog about this stuff. Was avoiding it.

My sister Rebecca is in hospital in Switzerland after a serious fall mountain climbing. She has had an operation to put two pins into her back. She is still in intensive care, but latest news is she should move to a regular ward soon (may have moved already). Suzanne our eldest sister has flown there and is with her now.

I guess having a string of Oliver updates I should also write the conclusion. My cat, Oliver, died early this morning. I gave him his regular 7 units of insulin on Friday evening, but either he hadn’t eaten enough, or I injected it straight into the blood stream or something else went wrong and he went into hypoglycemic shock. I managed to get him to eat a bit, but he still went into seizures and after a lot of that, paralysis. I took him to the after hours vet and we put him down.

I’ve disabled comments on this post. Thanks for your well wishes, but I don’t want to come back to this post.

Vet visit

, , david, Tuesday, 11:44 pm

Oliver has had a flemy chest and snotty nose the last few days. His arthritis also isn’t good and he was due for another shot of Vetacortyl to keep him going. He’s gone off his food and if you know Oliver you know that’s serious. He’s still drinking heaps though. He’s lost about 0.5kg. He got scratched on the nose a couple of weeks back and the vet says that’s when he will have caught the cold off another cat.

The vet plied me with drugs. In addition to the Vetacorty there’s Fortekor for his kidneys, Vibravet (antibotics) for his cold, Bisolvon which should clear his nose, and more k/d biscuits. He also suggested putting Oliver under a blanket in his cage with steaming Vix cold vapours. If Oliver continues to loose weight there’s another steroid he’d like him on to turn protein into muscle mass. Ollie has lost quit a bit of muscle from his legs with the arthritis.

Have to go back next week to see how Oliver is going.

Oliver: "Guide Cat"

, , , , david, Friday, 10:22 pm

Took my cat Oliver to the vet. This really requires a car. I considered taking the bus, but the bus rules say:

Guide dogs and guide dogs in training are allowed to be carried on buses, if under the supervision of their care-giver. Other pets are not allowed.

Simon suggested “Just say he’s a guide dog.” and “When they say no, he’s a cat say yes, but the blind people can’t see that.”. Also by cat years Oliver should get a senior discount.

Oliver has arthritis for which he is getting monthly Vetaortyl injections, and his kidneys are failing so we’ve changed his diet to Hills Feline K/D, and have just started him on Fortekor tablets.

I’m not sure how old Oliver is, but he’s getting on. He was a full grown cat when he turned up and moved in over 12 years ago.
